Britain took over the area as Southern Rhodesia in 1923 from the
British South Africa Company, which under Cecil Rhodes had
conquered the area in 1897. The country was granted internal
self-government. Under a 1961 constitution voting was restricted
to whites and on November 11, 1965 Prime Minister Ian D. Smith
announced unilateral independence. Trade embargoes were
established against Rhodesia and on March 2, 1970 a new
constitution provided for a republic with a prime minister and
president. But black participation was still limited. Talks in
1972 for joint white-black rule were unsuccessful and violence
began to break out. By mid-1978 6,000 soldiers and civilians had
been killed. An initial sharing of power was established between
Smith and three black leaders. The settlement was rejected by
black leaders. The countries first universal election was held on
April 21, 1979 in which Bishop Abel Muzorewa's United African
National Council gained a bare majority to control the black
parliament. A British cease-fire was accepted by all parties on
December 5th, 1979 and independence was achieved on April 18,
1980. @
